I found another amazing idea for my classroom on Pinterest. Apparently, I am unable to come up with my own original ideas. No biggie though...I love finding wonderful ideas from other teachers, and making them my own. Although I found this idea on Pinterest, it can be traced back to an old post from
Growing Kinders. What I discovered is a Story Map Poster using Post-Its!!! Here's how my own turned out:
{Click the pic to download the doc used to make this poster}
I also decided that it might be fun for my students to have one of these to keep in their notebooks. {They get to use the little post-its!!!} So, I created the printable below. I plan to have them use these with their own independent reading books.

In other news, there is exactly one week left to participate in my Post-It Party. If you would still like to join the party

Your story map poster looks AWESOME!!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is so nicely done. I want to share it with my friend who teaches the "big kids" and I was wondering if you know about post-it glue sticks?
ReplyDeleteWhere are you in Southern CA friend?

I think it came out great!!! And as for originality.... why reinvent the wheel?!? that’s what PT & Pinterest are all about! Its all about tweaking it to fit your needs :)

The Apple Basket Teacher
What a great idea!!! :) Pinterest is full of ideas and I am always "borrowing" ideas from the page!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and pinned it to my Pinterest and shared it with my teacher friends on Facebook. I love a "tool" that can be used over and over! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDelete@Fran Kramer--I used the post-it glue stick last year. It was good for short term items, but things that I left up for the year were "stuck" to the paper.

Do you have your larger version (the boxes) in a document that could be shared?? I would LOVE to make the large version like yours! I think I will make a copy of the small one on cardstock and laminate for each child and they can do as you said, put small sticky notes on it. I just LOVE this!!
ReplyDeleteHere is my email if you have the large boxes in a document ...

Great poster! Very clean and easy to use. My favorite. :) Do you think you will laminate the post-its on the poster or replace your post-its with each book? Just curious.

Soo cute! Did you use black poster board for the big version? Also, was it big enough to use full size post-its?
ReplyDeleteThanks! I love your ideas, and I have recently linked to your blog on mine. You inspire me!

ReplyDeleteOK. Just made my own and tweaked it up for 5th grade. Woo hoo! We use post its all the time. The kids will like this.
ReplyDeleteSo many wonderful comments! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteTo answer a few questions...
Fran: I have not heard of post-it glue, but it sounds like something I need to check out. And, I'm from Thousand Oaks, CA.
Mrs. Crow: I added a new post with the pages I used to make the poster!
Amanda: I plan to laminate the poster without the post-its. Just wanted to see how it would look with them, :)
If anyone else makes one of these, I would love to see it!
Rebecca,
DeleteYou have really cute ideas! I am having trouble finding the pages you used to create the story map poster. Could you direct me to them, please? Thank you!
I love this! I am going to show this at our teacher retreat (along with your blog) and I want to make a big poster. Any way that you would be willing to share the bigger headers that you used for your poster? I would be so grateful! Thanks for all of your creativity.

I saw the same idea and snatched it for one of my boards. I used an old map to punch out the letters for "story maps"...it's a work in progress, but getting there. Your handout is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your great ideas and wonderful creations. I can't seem to find the larger print outs for the large poster. Could you, pretty please, direct me to them? Thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteMiss McQu: You are so very, very kind! I just visited your blog to find your email or to leave a comment, but I wasn't able to do either! Please feel free to e-mail me at rjyoung23@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...looks great and I agree, the kids love to use post-its.
ReplyDeleteCool beans! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks bunches for sharing! I made a story map today - can't wait to start using it next week with my reading group!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi, I love how your story map turned out! Thank you for sharing. I think laminating the smaller version for the child is a wonderful idea, and I plan to do this too.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering, like Mrs. Crow, if you have a printable version of the larger boxes for the poster board? I see your reply to her, and you said you added a post with them, but I cannot find it after going through your archives.
Would you mind emailing a link for it to me? I would really appreciate it!
Thank you for your time and help!
